What is a forward deployed engineer?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with customers, inside their problems, to make a product actually work in production.

What the work looks like

FDEs sit between a product team and the customers using it. They scope a customer's real problem, write production code against the customer's data and systems, ship a working deployment, and bring what they learn back into the core product. The title was popularised by Palantir; today AI labs and AI-native startups hire FDEs to turn models and platforms into deployed systems.

How it differs from neighbouring roles

  • Solutions or sales engineers mostly help customers evaluate and buy. FDEs own delivery after the deal, and they write the code.
  • Product engineers build for many customers at once. FDEs build for a few customers deeply, then generalise what works.
  • Consultants leave a recommendation. FDEs leave running software, built on their company's product.

What it takes

  • Strong, fast engineering across the stack: data pipelines, APIs, frontends, and increasingly LLM systems and evaluation.
  • Comfort with ambiguity: the first task is often working out what the customer actually needs.
  • Communication with both executives and engineers, and travel to customer sites in many roles.
