PLX (Permitting and Licensing Experience) is building a modern, shared permitting and licensing capability for the State of Maryland on the State's enterprise technology foundation, operated by the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT).

The Forward Deployed Engineer Lead is the lead engineer on assigned agency engagements, working with the Product Manager, UX Designer and Tech Lead/Architect to take problems from prototype to production. It is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role across frontend, backend, APIs, data, integrations, legacy systems and cloud.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with agency partners to understand workflows and turn them into working software.
  • Rapidly prototype and build applications, integrations, APIs and services, and own them through production.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools as a core part of the workflow and set guardrails so speed doesn't lower quality.
  • Scope engagements, identify reusable PLX capabilities, and design secure integration patterns across modern and legacy systems.
  • Mentor agency and PLX engineers and present trade-offs to agency leadership.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of software engineering, application development or systems integration experience.
  • Strong full-stack skills with depth in backend, APIs, data and integrations; CI/CD, testing and DevOps practice.
  • Experience working directly with customers or stakeholders; government or regulated-domain experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor's in CS, Information Systems or related field, or equivalent experience.

This is a contractual position with limited benefits. Applicants must already be authorized to work in the U.S.; the State cannot sponsor visas.
