AWS's FDE chief on hiring: "These are unicorns"
Asa Kalavade, who runs forward-deployed engineering at AWS, told Business Insider the company is being selective as it builds its $1 billion FDE organization, looking for product mindset, deep software skills and agentic AI experience.
Amazon Web Services is building out the dedicated forward-deployed engineering organization it announced in June with a $1 billion investment, and its leader says the right people are hard to find. Asa Kalavade, AWS vice president of forward-deployed engineering, told Business Insider that strong FDE candidates are "unicorns" and that the company is initially hiring experienced "insurgents" who have done this kind of work before.
Kalavade said AWS looks for three things: a product and customer mindset, deep software expertise, and experience with agentic AI. She noted that models can get customers "halfway," while FDEs are needed for the rest: guardrails, choosing a cost-effective model, upgrading to new models and applying the right security policies. AWS aims to co-build with customers for one to six months and leave them self-sufficient.
The article also cites a Forrester estimate that Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft and Amazon pledged roughly $9 billion to FDE-related ventures between May and July. For job seekers, the takeaway is that big employers are hiring, but they are screening hard for people who combine production engineering with customer-facing judgment and hands-on agent work.
