Boeing's first "Lead Forward Deployed Engineer" posting reads like a Palantir Foundry product manager and designer role

Boeing Defense, Space and Security is hiring a Lead FDE for its internal data analytics team. The posting asks for ontology building, user research and expert-level Palantir Foundry skills rather than customer-facing deployment work.

Boeing has posted a Lead Forward Deployed Engineer role for Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS). The job is based in Seattle, WA, Ridley Park, PA, Berkeley, MO or Hazelwood, MO. It went up on Boeing's careers site on 9 October, and Nextmove's new-employer tracker for 9–13 October lists it as the company's first FDE-titled opening. The team is BDS's Data Analytics Engineering & Integration group, which handles data for internal programs across supply chain, engineering and manufacturing.

Beyond the title, the posting describes a product manager and product designer. The hire would own the design lifecycle of data applications, set a product roadmap, run user research and usability tests, and build wireframes and prototypes. They would also build and maintain an ontology of objects, properties, links and actions, working with forward deployed and product engineers. The ad asks for a "Palantir-caliber builder" and lists expert-level hands-on Palantir Foundry experience as preferred. Required experience includes 3+ years of taxonomy and ontology work, 5+ years of user research and 5+ years with aerospace systems. The role is open only to US Persons because of export control rules.

Why it matters for FDEs: The posting shows a Palantir Foundry customer using the FDE title for internal product and design work, not customer-site engineering. At large enterprises, candidates should read past the title. It also shows that ontology modelling and Foundry application building are skills defense and aerospace employers are asking for by name.
