Caylent has 125 FDEs and plans to move 200 more engineers into the role

AWS partner Caylent told CRN its forward deployed engineers built an agentic development framework for Smarsh that freed up to $10 million in capacity, and its CEO expects a third of the company to fit the FDE model within a year.

Irvine, California-based Caylent, an AWS Premier Partner with a dedicated Anthropic consulting unit, says it now has around 125 forward deployed engineers. CEO Val Henderson told CRN the company plans to retrain about 200 more architects and engineers into FDE roles, and that "most likely, one-third of our organization will fit the FDE model in the next year."

The showcase project is Smarsh, a financial communications compliance firm. Caylent's FDEs embedded with its teams and built an agentic software development framework on Amazon Bedrock, using Claude Code for code generation, testing, documentation and security review. Caylent says year one freed up to $10 million in engineering and product capacity, raised test coverage by up to 30% and cut defect escape rates by 40%.

Henderson describes the FDE as the overlap of engineering depth, AI fluency and a "very high customer IQ", and warns against just slapping the title on existing staff. Caylent is building a training and badge program to close skill gaps for engineers who want to move into the role.

Why it matters: cloud consultancies are now converting large parts of their workforce into FDEs, which opens an internal path into the role for solutions architects and consultants, not only for engineers at AI labs.
