Cognition retitles its 11 Deployed Engineer roles as Forward Deployed Engineer, with three different jobs under one name

Cognition, the maker of Devin, renamed its customer-facing Deployed Engineer openings to Forward Deployed Engineer between Oct 20 and 22 without changing the job text. A Japanese FDE job site's comparison finds the 11 roles split into presales, adoption and federal account variants depending on location.

Cognition, the company behind the AI software engineer Devin, has changed the title of its customer-facing Deployed Engineer openings to Forward Deployed Engineer. According to an Oct 30 analysis by the Japanese job site FDE Talent, which tracked the postings from Oct 8, the switch happened between Oct 20 and 22 across 11 roles, with the same posting IDs and unchanged descriptions and requirements. Cognition's public job board now lists Forward Deployed Engineer roles in San Francisco, Washington DC, London, Southern Europe, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Doha, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney and South Korea, alongside separate Partner Deployed Engineer roles.

The analysis argues the same title covers three distinct jobs. The Asia-Pacific roles (Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney/Melbourne, Korea) read as presales work: running demos and pilots before a deal, then building training so customers can roll Devin out to thousands of engineers. The US, Europe, Latin America and Doha roles focus on getting Devin into production with customer engineers across many accounts, with 25-50% travel. The single Federal role is an early member of a new government team covering a few strategic accounts, and is the only one with posted pay ($180K-$280K plus equity and bonus).

For FDE candidates, the move is a reminder that title counts are inflating partly through renaming rather than new hiring, and that the day-to-day work behind "FDE" can range from presales engineering to embedded delivery. Read the posting body, not just the title, and ask where a role sits between selling and shipping.
