CTERA launches a Forward Deployed Engineering service, pairing FDEs with Deployment Strategists

Data management company CTERA now embeds small teams of a Forward Deployed Engineer and a Deployment Strategist inside customers to put AI use cases into production on their own file data.

CTERA, which sells an intelligent data platform for enterprise file data, announced CTERA Forward Deployed Engineering on 6 October 2026. The service places CTERA engineers inside customer environments to get specific AI use cases running in production on the organization's own unstructured data.

Each engagement uses a small team that pairs a Forward Deployed Engineer with a Deployment Strategist, working as part of the customer's project team with access to their systems and subject-matter experts. Work moves in phases: discovery and data grounding, a first production use case, scaling to more workflows, and a handover so the customer can run and extend what was built. Engagements can be time-based or fixed-scope with milestone acceptance criteria.

Why it matters for FDEs: infrastructure and data vendors, not just AI labs, are now building FDE teams, often pairing engineers with a non-engineering deployment role. Engineers with strong data and storage backgrounds have a growing route into FDE work.
