Databricks FDE interview: the round to prepare for turns a vague business goal into a system in about an hour, with Spark internals and Unity Catalog close behind
An October 17 FDE Times guide, based on Aced.io's interview guide and Databricks' own FDE postings in Seoul and Zürich, says the Databricks loop tests three skills: Spark runtime internals, governance through Unity Catalog, and a roughly 60-minute decomposition round that starts from a hazy business goal.
FDE Times has published a guide to the Forward Deployed Engineer interview at Databricks, currently the company with the most open FDE roles on the outlet's tracker. Citing a guide from Aced.io, it describes a five-round process: a 30-minute recruiter call, a technical screen, a notebook coding round, a decomposition round and a leadership round. It notes that this is a third-party description, so order and length may vary by team.
The round it says matters most is decomposition: the interviewer gives a one-line goal, such as a retail chain wanting to use AI to keep customers, and watches the candidate design a system from it in about 60 minutes. Clarifying questions at the start count as much as the design itself. Databricks' FDE postings back this up. The Seoul role asks for deep Apache Spark experience including runtime internals, plus MLOps and AI APIs, and the senior Zürich role gives FDEs the call on secure, scalable architecture.
The guide's worked examples include explaining data skew in a Spark join (how to spot it in the Spark UI, why the shuffle causes it, and fixes like broadcasting the small table, salting the key or adaptive query execution), and putting Unity Catalog's catalog.schema.object naming, lineage and column-level permissions into the first draft of any design. It also notes that Databricks' three FDE postings lean different ways (Spark and MLOps, production architecture, or GenAI), so candidates should pick one before writing their CV.
For FDE candidates, the message is that Databricks tests the job itself: turning a fuzzy customer request into a governed production system on its platform.
