Datadog is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineering Lead at $200K–$250K to scale its FDE motion

The observability company says its FDE function is in an active growth phase and wants a Lead in New York or San Francisco to hire FDEs, define offerings from AI observability to cost deep-dives, and turn field work into reusable assets.

Datadog has posted a Datadog for Startups – Forward Deployed Engineering Lead role in New York or San Francisco at $200,000–$250,000. The careers page says Datadog’s Forward Deployed Engineering function is in an active growth phase and that the Lead will help define and expand the FDE framework beyond any single customer segment.

The Lead owns the operating model end to end: engagement intake, scoping, sprint delivery, handoff to account teams, and metrics such as time-to-value, adoption lift, ARR influence, and NPS. They also build a catalog of FDE offerings that includes observability quickstarts, custom integrations, LLM/AI observability accelerators, CI/CD instrumentation, and cost-optimization deep dives, and help set pricing for free-to-paid and paid deployment packages.

Hiring is part of the job. The Lead is expected to hire and coach full-time FDEs, manage rotating SWE and TSE secondments, and build technical assessments suited to customer-embedded work. They also capture product gaps from deployments, brief Product and Engineering, and run lightweight sprints that turn recurring customer needs into reusable integrations, dashboards, scripts, or open-source tooling.

Why it matters for FDEs: Datadog is one of the large product companies now treating FDE as a scalable function with its own lead, playbook, and feedback loop into the roadmap—not only a handful of field engineers. A Lead seat at $200K–$250K base, with explicit responsibility to hire FDEs and productize field work, is a useful marker of how observability and platform vendors are structuring the role.
