Detecon study of 173 FDE job ads at 52 companies: integration and deployment show up in 94%, product feedback in under a third
A Detecon (Deutsche Telekom consulting, China) study published Oct 30 analyzed 173 Chinese and international FDE-related postings from 52 employers and finds the role is now led by enterprise software and AI services firms, with sharply different expectations behind the same title.
Detecon China, the consulting arm of Deutsche Telekom, published a study on Oct 30 that breaks down 173 forward deployed engineer job postings from 52 companies in China and abroad, collected from company career sites and boards such as Zhaopin, Liepin, Lever and Greenhouse. By sector, enterprise software and AI services firms were the biggest group (24 companies), followed by industrial and manufacturing AI and in-house transformation teams at traditional businesses (11 each), fintech (4) and model or data platform vendors (only 2). Employers in the sample include AsiaInfo, China Telecom's digital unit, Kingdee and bathroom-fixture maker Hegii, alongside OpenAI and Palantir.
On duties, 94.4% of postings mention systems integration and production deployment, 92.6% mention requirements discovery and 77.8% mention software or AI development. 70.4% combine discovery, development and deployment in one role, but only 31.5% also ask the engineer to feed findings back to the product team. Where the role sits varies widely too: a dedicated FDE org at OpenAI, the Delta unit at Palantir, a delivery center at some Chinese vendors, and even a consulting track in one campus-hiring program.
Why it matters for FDEs: the same title can mean a senior engineer who writes and reviews production APIs and data pipelines, or an early-career role focused on scenario analysis and low-code configuration. The study advises employers to separate coding, integration and business-translation depth when hiring, and job seekers can use the same lens to judge how much real engineering and product influence a given FDE posting carries.
