Ex-Codeium deployed engineers launch Golden Geese, a recruiting and advisory firm focused on FDE hiring
Golden Geese Recruiting, founded by early Codeium/Windsurf operators, has launched a practice to help AI startups define, hire and structure forward deployed engineering teams, arguing that the same FDE title covers very different jobs.
Golden Geese Recruiting, a San Francisco recruiting and advisory firm, announced on October 13 that it has launched a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering practice. Co-founder Maggie Krummel was Codeium's 30th employee and its second Deployed Engineer, and says she interviewed more than 1,000 candidates while building and managing that team; co-founder Paxton Duff was an early strategic seller there. Codeium later became Windsurf and was acquired by Cognition AI.
The firm offers two services: FDE recruiting for AI companies, and advice to pre-seed through Series C founders on when to hire FDEs, how to run the interview loop, and how to separate deployed engineering from solutions engineering, implementation and applied AI.
Its pitch rests on a point FDE candidates will recognize: two companies can post the same title and want different people. Krummel describes a spectrum from a "builder" FDE, who spends most of the time writing custom software for a customer's problems, to an "operator" FDE, who works closely with customers to deploy and tune AI agents, with many roles in between.
Why it matters: when a specialist recruiting practice forms around a single title, demand for that title is outrunning companies' ability to hire for it. For job seekers, the builder-versus-operator question is a useful one to ask in any FDE interview, because it predicts how much of the job is coding versus customer delivery.
