FDE pay in the UAE: ask about basic salary before the total
An FDE Times analysis of three UAE Forward Deployed Engineer postings shows only Wave Group states a range (AED 50,000–90,000 a month), and that since May 2024 both Golden Visa eligibility and end-of-service gratuity turn on basic salary—not the headline total that includes allowances.
Of three UAE FDE postings FDE Times compared, only Wave Group’s Senior Forward Deployed Engineer role states pay: AED 50,000–90,000 a month with relocation and visa support. SPsoft’s Abu Dhabi Forward Deployed AI Engineer lists visa, insurance and housing help but no salary, and frames them as subject to the final written offer. A closed Dubai FDE listing via Jobgether said only “competitive” pay with equity.
That gap matters because UAE offer packages split into basic salary and allowances. Fragomen notes that since May 2024 the skilled-worker Golden Visa threshold is a monthly basic salary of AED 30,000, excluding allowances. End-of-service gratuity is also calculated on final basic salary (21 days per year for the first five years, then 30). Two offers with the same AED 50,000 total can therefore diverge by about AED 35,000 of gratuity after five years, and only the higher-basic split clears the visa bar.
There is still no personal income tax in the UAE, but tax residency elsewhere can still create obligations. For FDEs weighing Gulf offers, the actionable move is to negotiate the basic/allowance split in writing—and treat “expected” relocation perks as real only once they appear in the signed offer.
