FDE Times: negotiate level and equity first—base pay is locked by the band

An October 15 FDE Times guide argues that in disclosed FDE salary postings base clusters around $195K and barely moves within a level, while equity at the same level can differ by $50K–$200K. Settle level first, then equity, and leave base and sign-on for last.

FDE Times published a practical offer-negotiation guide for Forward Deployed Engineers on October 15. Drawing on getperspective.ai’s 2026 FDE salary guide plus Formation, Machine Learning at Scale, and Leon Staff, it says disclosed FDE base pay clusters around a $195K midpoint and is largely capped by level—so pressing the recruiter for a higher base usually buys little.

At the same level, equity can swing by $50K to $200K depending on the compensation committee. The recommended order is: confirm and, if needed, challenge the level first (using end-to-end deployment ownership and stakeholder scope as evidence), then negotiate equity with fully diluted share count, 409A, and preferred price in hand, and only then use sign-on to close any remaining gap. A real competing offer is framed as the strongest lever for the committee.

For candidates moving from software engineering into FDE roles, the piece matters because level sets both the base and equity bands. Getting placed one level too low is a gap no amount of base haggling will close—the same constraint-reading skill FDEs use with customers applies to their own offers.
