FDE vs. sales engineer: production ownership is the line, not the customer meetings
FDE Times argues the FDE and sales engineer split at contract signing: SEs prove the product can work, FDEs own go-live and the 2am recovery. Job ads that lean on demos and deal support are often sales roles under an FDE title.
A new FDE Times analysis draws a sharp line between forward deployed engineers and sales or solutions engineers: the signature on the contract. By then a sales engineer's core work is largely done; an FDE's main work is only beginning, and it runs through production results.
The piece leans on Scaler, Christian & Timbers, FDE Academy, The Pragmatic Engineer and Paraform. The practical test is who takes the 2am call three months after go-live, and whether that person can fix code on the customer's infrastructure. FDEs write production code in the customer's environment; demos only have to work once.
That distinction matters for candidates because employers are renaming solutions-architect work as FDE to compete for the same talent pool. Look for go-live, production, integration, on-call or end-to-end ownership in the ad. If the copy is mostly demos, POCs and deal close rates, it is usually a sales engineering seat under another name.
