From consultant to FDE: Palantir and Anthropic job ads want production code you wrote yourself

An FDE Times analysis of Palantir and Anthropic FDE postings finds that customer skills from consulting help, but both companies list hard coding requirements and expect shipped production work, not recommendations.

FDE Times read current forward deployed job ads to see what consultants, implementation staff and solutions engineers need before they switch to FDE. A Palantir posting for a Forward Deployed Software Engineer on US government health and civilian programmes compares the job to a startup CTO, and it also requires strong coding in Python, Java or C++. Anthropic's FDE listing asks for strong Python and experience shipping production applications.

The piece draws the line at what you hand over when the work ends. Anthropic says its FDEs build production applications with Claude inside customer systems, including MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills, not slide decks or reports. Citing a practitioner essay, the analysis also warns that FDE work that never produces reusable output turns into a services business with engineering titles.

Its practical advice for career switchers: rebuild an anonymised problem from a past project in Python and deploy it for real users. Rewrite CV lines from “advised” and “recommended” to “built”, “shipped” and “operated”. Check job ads for the words production, end-to-end and own, because ads with none of them may be consulting roles under a new name.

Why it matters: consulting experience is a real edge in customer discovery, but recruiters for FDE roles want visible proof that you can write and run the code yourself.
