From SRE to FDE: on-call covers half the job description—problem definition and production software decide who gets hired

An October 16 FDE Times analysis argues SRE skills (cross-layer troubleshooting, observability, reliability) already match much of Forward Deployed Engineer postings, but hiring separates candidates on customer problem definition, production APIs, and generalising one-off fixes into product features.

On October 16, FDE Times published a career-switch guide for site reliability engineers eyeing Forward Deployed Engineer roles. Many FDE ads—illustrated with a Pragmatike Principal FDE posting—ask for troubleshooting across application and infrastructure layers plus better deployment, documentation, observability and reliability. Those lines read like an SRE's normal week.

The piece, citing Paraform and AITraining2U skill inventories, says that foundation only clears the technical floor. What ranks candidates is defining the right customer problem, product thinking, and communication—habits SRE work rarely forces because incidents usually arrive already defined by an alert. Gaps called out for many SREs are production services with APIs and tests (not only Terraform and ops scripts), enough ML to reason about model behaviour, and the habit of turning a third customer's patch into a shared product capability.

Practical advice for FDE CVs: rewrite on-call bullets around user impact, publish a small public Python service, and before fixing the next fragile nightly job, ask who needs which numbers by when. For FDEs and hiring managers, the article frames SRE as a short path into the role—if candidates close the customer and product gaps, not just the reliability ones.
