Fundamental Research Labs hires Brett Caughran to lead a new Forward Deployed Investor team

Fundamental Research Labs (FRL), the applied AI company behind Shortcut, an AI agent for Excel, announced on November 4 that Brett Caughran has joined as Chief Growth Officer. Caughran spent 13 years as an analyst and portfolio manager at Maverick Capital, D.E. Shaw, Citadel and Schonfeld before founding the training firm Fundamental Edge.

Alongside product and growth, Caughran will lead a new Forward Deployed Investor team that embeds with client firms and drives adoption of FRL's "Digital Investor" stack across the buyside. That stack layers Shortcut, a long-running digital analyst called Sho, and a qualitative signals product, configured to each firm's own process and run inside its own environment and permissions.

Why it matters for FDEs: this is another case of the forward-deployed model spreading beyond engineering titles. FRL is pairing its agents with deep domain experts who sit with customers, the same embed-and-adapt playbook FDE teams use, which suggests finance-focused AI companies will increasingly want people who combine technical fluency with real investing experience.
