GlobalFoundries sets up a CIO FDE Office and is hiring a Director to run it, at $191K–$332K

The chipmaker posted its first forward deployed engineering role: a Director to lead an internal FDE team building AI agents across HR, IT, supply chain and manufacturing, with budget and AI cost ownership.

GlobalFoundries, the semiconductor foundry with fabs in the US, Germany and Singapore, is hiring a Director, FDE Office (Forward Deployed Engineering) in Austin or Richardson, Texas. The posting describes a new CIO FDE Office that builds enterprise AI and agentic workflows for HR, IT, supply chain, manufacturing and other parts of the business. The listed base pay is $191,000–$332,000. It went up on the company's Workday careers site on 12 October, and Nextmove's tracker lists it as GlobalFoundries' first FDE-titled role.

The team is small and mixed. The Director would manage five direct reports and five new-college-grad (NCG) engineers, plus contractor FDEs from partner firms. The role is described as about 70% strategy, leadership and stakeholder work and 30% hands-on architecture. The stack named in the ad includes MCP integrations, multi-agent orchestration, AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, Copilot Studio, LangGraph, CrewAI, Entra ID identity and token brokering, and agents built on ServiceNow, Workday and SAP.

One unusual part is cost ownership. The Director would own the office's budget, including licences, SOWs, contractor spend and AI consumption. The ad also asks for "AI tokenomics" showback and chargeback dashboards across Copilot, Bedrock and GitHub Copilot. First-year success measures include a working FDE operating model, agents in production across several business domains, and shorter delivery times through reusable MCP and API assets.

Why it matters for FDEs: Most FDE jobs sit at AI vendors and are aimed at outside customers. This one, like Target's internal FDE team, takes the model inside a large industrial company and points it at the company's own operations. Engineers who know enterprise systems like SAP and ServiceNow, can work with identity, and can keep track of AI costs may find more FDE openings at end-user companies, not only at AI labs.
