Hone raises a Benchmark and Index seed and bets that FDE scoping work will largely be automated

Hone, a new enterprise AI startup founded by ex-Cognition engineer Moritz Stephan, raised a seed round co-led by Benchmark and Index Ventures. Stephan says its forward-deployed work feeds reusable templates, and he expects much of the requirements and scoping side of that work to become automatable.

Hone has raised a seed round co-led by Benchmark and Index Ventures, with GIL, Definition, Diffusion and others participating; the size was not disclosed. Founder Moritz Stephan, who previously worked at Cognition, is building what the company calls "engines": AI systems set up to own a business result, such as account management and revenue growth, instead of running individual tasks.

In an interview on TBPN, Stephan described forward-deployed engineering as Hone's main source of learning. Rather than building a bespoke system for each customer, the team's hands-on time with complex use cases feeds back into template engines that can be rolled out to other organizations with little setup.

He also said he expects the outer loop of that work, meaning gathering requirements, scoping use cases and defining success, to become largely automatable over time, with human effort concentrated on customer relationships and prioritization.

Why it matters for FDEs: it is a clear statement of where some founders think the role is heading. Discovery and scoping are core FDE skills today; if more of it gets automated, the parts that stay human are trust with the customer and deciding what is worth building.
