India's IT giants want up to 14,900 FDEs, but only about 1,200 are ready today
A TechCircle analysis sets TCS and Infosys's combined plans for up to 14,900 forward deployed engineers against a CIEL HR estimate that only about 1,200 professionals in India are fully equipped for the role, and looks at how firms plan to close the gap.
TechCircle published an analysis on October 27 comparing what India's largest IT services firms say they want with how many forward deployed engineers actually exist. TCS has said it wants 1% to 1.5% of its associates to be FDEs, which Reuters put at roughly 5,900 to 8,900 people, and Infosys has said it plans to recruit 6,000 over the next few years. Against that, HR services firm CIEL HR estimates that only about 1,200 professionals in India are fully equipped for the role, rising to about 6,000 if you count adjacent talent in generative AI, cloud architecture, customer engineering and MLOps.
The piece also flags that posting counts may overstate the market: research firm UnearthInsight estimates that 75% to 80% of Indian FDE job postings are relabelled solutions or implementation engineering roles. According to CIEL HR, demand is concentrated in Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad, is strongest for engineers with five to eight years of experience, and pays experienced specialists ₹70 to 90 lakh a year.
Firms are trying three routes at once: hiring from a scarce open market, training freshers (HCLTech says about 15% of its Q2 freshers will be upskilled toward FDE roles through its FDE academy), and reskilling existing engineers, as LTM is doing with its AI 1000 programme. Survey data from Scaler and CyberMedia Research cited in the piece shows that more enterprises plan to upskill their own engineers than to hire dedicated FDEs, and that many weigh a production deployment or troubleshooting case above a coding test when assessing candidates.
Why it matters for FDEs: if the supply estimates are anywhere near right, experienced engineers who have really shipped AI into client environments are in a strong position in India. For anyone moving into the role, it's a reminder to check whether a listing is a true FDE job or a renamed implementation role, and to prepare real deployment stories rather than only coding practice.
