Japan's iCD skills dictionary adopts Cravans' FDE evaluation framework as an official reference

The iCD Association has signed an agreement with Tokyo startup Cravans to make its Forward Deployed Engineer evaluation framework, with 5 axes and 15 component skills, an official reference system for Japan's iCD IT-skills dictionary.

The iCD Association, which maintains the iCompetency Dictionary (iCD) of IT tasks and skills originally published by Japan's Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA), announced on October 29 that it signed a memorandum with Cravans on October 15. Under it, Cravans' Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) evaluation framework becomes one of iCD's official reference systems, alongside established standards such as ITSS, DSS and the UK-born SFIA.

Cravans' framework breaks the FDE skill set into five evaluation axes and 15 component abilities. It emphasizes skills that years of experience or tech-stack lists miss: framing ambiguous problems, executing with AI, validating hypotheses quickly, building consensus with stakeholders, and judging technical soundness.

The two organizations plan to map the framework to iCD's tasks, skills and knowledge items as an "FDE View" (working name), and to add new task and skill entries where iCD falls short. No timeline was given, and the iCD Association decides any formal revision.

Why it matters: this is one of the first moves to fold the FDE role into a national-level skills taxonomy. If it lands, Japanese employers and training programs would have a shared vocabulary for assessing and growing FDE talent, which could make FDE job requirements and career ladders more consistent.
