Korea's enterprise AI firms are starting to treat startup founder experience as an FDE qualification
A KoreaTechDesk feature (Oct 25) quotes SpaceY CEO Ted Hyuntae Hwang saying early-stage startup experience matters most for Forward Deployed Engineers, and points to Seoul FDE postings from BigShift and Dfinite that ask for founder-style judgment under ambiguity.
KoreaTechDesk reports that Korea's enterprise AI market is beginning to value former startup founders, including those whose companies did not succeed, as candidates for Forward Deployed Engineer roles. Ted Hyuntae Hwang, CEO and co-founder of Seoul-based SpaceY, told the outlet that early-stage startup experience is the most important thing for an FDE, because enterprise customers often arrive with budget and urgency but a poorly defined problem.
The piece cites recent Seoul job postings as supporting evidence. A BigShift FDE posting from August 31 describes the role as working like the CTO of a small startup and lists founding or 0-to-1 product experience as a preferred qualification, while a Dfinite posting asks engineers to turn vague requests from customer staff into concrete, testable data questions and learn from failed AI responses.
The article also notes that founder experience is not rewarded everywhere: it cites a US field experiment in which former founders got 43% fewer callbacks for conventional entry-level software jobs. Hwang said he does not know whether this talent model can scale beyond a small group of exceptional people, but suggested many small AI startups and boutique firms built around such people could benefit the wider ecosystem.
For FDE candidates, the takeaway is that hiring teams in Korea increasingly look for evidence of problem framing, evidence-driven iteration and end-to-end ownership, rather than a founder title alone.
