Lenovo and China's CESI launch a joint FDE certification built around a hands-on delivery exam
Lenovo and the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), a research body under China's industry ministry, have launched a forward deployed engineer training and certification program of about 120 hours. Candidates must pass both a theory exam and a practical exam that requires completing a real delivery task.
Lenovo announced on October 28 that it has launched a forward deployed engineer (FDE) training and certification program jointly with the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), a standards and assessment body under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The two describe it as the first FDE certification in the industry recognized jointly by a company and a talent-standards body. Candidates who pass receive a joint AI professional technician grade certificate.
The curriculum takes about 120 hours across three tracks: enterprise AI design methods, an agent workshop plus AI fundamentals, and project delivery, implementation and operations. Most of the time goes to hands-on practice in pre-built environments. Trainees get accounts, projects, data and APIs, then build, debug and submit evidence of their work on one of five industry scenarios, such as smart supply chain or production operations. The practical exam is graded on whether the delivery work was actually completed and holds up to review, not on how many questions were answered correctly.
Agent security and compliance are compulsory. Topics include prompt injection, knowledge-base poisoning, mistaken tool calls, memory isolation between users, credential management and human sign-off for high-impact actions. This follows Lenovo's recent announcement of a dedicated FDE organization.
Why it matters: as demand for FDEs in China rises, employers are trying to turn a loosely defined title into something they can test. A standards-body credential built on practical delivery exams could become a hiring signal for FDE roles in China, and other vendors may follow with similar programs.
