Nikkei BP announces a 296-page book on the FDE role, from Palantir's model to how to become one
Nikkei BP has listed "FDE: AI jidai no shin-kohoshu engineer" (FDE: the new high-paid engineer of the AI era) by Daisuke Yamashita, due November 16, 2026, built on interviews with former Palantir FDEs and working FDEs at AI companies.
Japanese publisher Nikkei BP has added a new book on forward deployed engineering to its catalog: FDE: AI jidai no shin-kohoshu engineer (roughly "FDE: the new high-paid engineer of the AI era") by Daisuke Yamashita, who runs an IT company himself. It is 296 pages, priced at 2,420 yen including tax, and due out on November 16, 2026.
According to the publisher, the book draws on interviews with former Palantir FDEs and FDEs currently working at AI companies, plus analysis of public material. It starts with Palantir's model (Gotham, Foundry, Ontology, AIP and Apollo, and how FDE work feeds Palantir's revenue model), then walks through the job in three phases (acquire, expand, scale), seven traits the author says FDEs need, how organisations should place FDE teams, and how to get into the role as a mid-career hire or new graduate. It closes with interviews with three practitioners.
The publisher's blurb argues that in Japan the role is often reduced to the surface idea of being stationed at the customer's site, and pitches the book as a look at how the work is actually done. It notes that FDEs in the US are paid upward of 30 million yen a year.
Why it matters: a mainstream business publisher putting out a full book on the role is another sign that FDE is becoming an established career track in Japan, alongside the training courses and company programs launched there this month. For engineers weighing the move, it is one of the first long-form, Japanese-language guides to the job.
