Protolabs creates in-house Forward Deployed AI Engineer roles to roll out Amazon Quick across its factories and offices
Digital manufacturer Protolabs (NYSE: PRLB) said on October 21 that it created Forward Deployed AI Engineer roles to lead an enterprise-wide rollout of Amazon Quick, starting with customer service and quote and order processing, with deployment across its 2,200-plus employees continuing into 2027.
Protolabs, the Minneapolis-based digital manufacturing company, announced on October 21 that it is installing Amazon Quick, Amazon's AI assistant for work, across the whole company. To speed up the implementation, it created its own Forward Deployed AI Engineer roles. Those engineers will work with internal teams to pick priority use cases, design AI-driven workflows and integrate Quick into daily work.
The first use cases are customer service and quote and order processing, aimed at shorter response times. Protolabs says the phased rollout across its more than 2,200 employees will continue into 2027, and that the engineering team will go on to support further AI integration on and off the manufacturing floor, including AI-assisted quality management, order-conflict detection and, longer term, analysis of more than 15 million CAD files for risk prediction and pricing.
Why it matters for FDEs: most FDE roles sit at AI vendors and are sent out to customers. Protolabs is an example of the opposite pattern, where a non-tech enterprise hires forward deployed engineers in-house to turn a bought AI tool into working processes. CTO and AI officer Marc Kermisch framed the roles as the way to move past simple adoption to operationalizing the tools, which suggests manufacturing and other traditional industries are becoming a new source of FDE-titled jobs.
