Red Hat opens APAC AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore with a forward-deployed engineering team
Red Hat launched an Asia-Pacific AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore, backed by the Economic Development Board, with an innovation team that includes forward-deployed engineers. Singapore's defence technology agency DSTA is its first named collaborator.
Red Hat announced on October 22 that it has opened an APAC AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore, supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board. The centre's stated goal is to help organisations move AI from experiments into production using Red Hat's open source stack and its own engineers.
According to Red Hat, the centre has a dedicated innovation team made up of engineers, forward-deployed engineers, architects and project managers focused on making AI/ML deployments work in customer environments. The Edge Singapore reported the team will start at about 18 people and work with Red Hat engineers in India, the US and Europe. Singapore's Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) signed a memorandum of understanding at the launch to co-develop AI, cloud, application modernisation and edge solutions for defence use.
For FDEs, the notable twist is the open source angle: Red Hat says the centre will build reusable architectures and contribute code upstream rather than keep fixes inside one customer's deployment, and its Principal Forward Deployed Engineer listing for the centre asks that most field-built features be upstreamed. It is another sign that FDE roles are spreading to Singapore and to infrastructure vendors, not just AI labs.
