Refolk counts ~25,900 announced FDE seats but only 4,769 people in the US and India holding the title
A Nov 2 analysis by recruiting platform Refolk finds announced forward deployed engineer commitments outnumber people who currently hold the FDE title in the US (3,659) and India (1,110) by about 5.4 to 1, and suggests hiring managers look first at Palantir alumni and engineers doing the work under other titles.
Recruiting platform Refolk added up the FDE headcount that big employers have publicly committed to (AWS's $1B forward deployed engineering organisation, Anthropic's plan to train 10,000 FDEs by the end of 2027, the 1,000-person Accenture and Google Cloud team, and about 14,900 seats announced by TCS and Infosys) and arrived at roughly 25,900 seats.
Against that, its index of professional profiles shows 3,659 people in the US and 1,110 in India currently holding a "Forward Deployed (Software) Engineer" title: 4,769 in total, or about one titled FDE for every 5.4 announced seats.
Refolk's conclusion is that searching for the job title is the worst way to hire. It points recruiters toward Palantir's Delta and Echo alumni and toward variant titles held by engineers who already do customer-embedded production work.
Why it matters: the figures come from a vendor's own index, so treat them as an estimate. Still, they fit what others are reporting: demand for FDEs is far ahead of the supply of people with the title. For engineers who already write production code inside customer environments, that makes it easier to move into the role, whatever their current title.
