SAP puts forward deployed engineering at the center of its Industry AI push, citing Takeda and Doehler
In an October 13 post on SAP News Center, SAP's Dominik Metzger says its Industry AI unit co-develops agentic capabilities inside customer operations through a forward deployed engineering model, then turns proven fixes into standard products across seven industry domains.
SAP has published a piece on its News Center, written by Dominik Metzger, arguing that enterprise AI should be judged by whether it changes core business processes rather than by how many pilots or agents a company runs. It says doing that takes trusted business data, governance, deep industry knowledge, and "world-class forward deployed engineers."
SAP describes a forward deployed engineering model where its teams co-develop tailored capabilities with customers on high-stakes problems that have no off-the-shelf answer, then turn the proven solutions into standard software for whole industries. The post names two early customers: Takeda, which is building a supply chain planning assistant that finds root causes and suggests fixes, and Doehler, whose Logistics Issue Resolution Agent has, by its co-CIO's account, given back about a third of the time its logistics team used to spend troubleshooting.
The work sits under SAP's Industry AI portfolio, which spans seven domains including autonomous asset management, regulated manufacturing, and project delivery.
Why it matters for FDEs: SAP runs the core systems at many of the world's largest manufacturers and pharma companies, so its public commitment to an FDE model points to growing demand for engineers who can combine agent building with ERP, supply chain, and regulated process knowledge. The field-to-product loop it describes, where customer work feeds the standard product, is the same pattern Palantir and the AI labs use.
