Shanghai's Xuhui district opens its first market-based FDE training class and an intermediate course

On Oct 28, Shanghai's Xuhui district launched its first market-based forward deployed engineer (FDE) training class, backed by the district's human resources bureau and state HR firm CIIC, and released a 5-day, 40-hour intermediate FDE course ending in project defense and a third-party assessment.

Shanghai's Xuhui district held the opening of its first market-based forward deployed engineer (FDE) training class on October 28, according to a press release from CIIC (中智股份, a state-owned human resources services group). The program is guided by the Xuhui human resources and social security bureau and CIIC, and co-hosted with the Shanghai Science and Technology Talent Resource Center and Shanghai Heduian Intelligent Technology.

At the event, the talent center released an intermediate FDE course: five days and 40 class hours of lectures plus project work, prototyping and API integration tasks. Trainees must present and defend a project, then pass theory and practical assessments run by an independent third party to receive a certificate. Teachers are drawn from academic mentors, tool vendors, scenario owners and Shanghai-based foundation model companies, and organizers say beginner, intermediate and advanced tiers are planned.

Why it matters for FDEs: alongside the Lenovo and CESI certification announced the same week, local governments in China are now building tiered FDE training and credentials, a sign that the role is being formalized as a recognized career track there rather than a job title used only by AI labs.
