Startup FDE hiring: every interview loop studied included a founder round, and only 16% of job ads ask for a CS degree
A Recruiting from Scratch guide built on 141 startup FDE job descriptions and 13 recruiter briefs finds founders sit in every FDE interview loop, and job ads ask for communication skills far more than technical credentials.
Recruiting from Scratch published a guide on October 9 on how seed to Series B startups hire forward deployed engineers. It draws on 141 US FDE job descriptions first seen in the last 90 days, 13 anonymized recruiter briefs for FDE searches, and 186 FDE candidates who booked calls with the firm over six months.
All 13 recruiter briefs included a round with a founder, CEO or CTO, and 10 of them opened with that round. In the job descriptions, communication was requested in 70% of postings, more than any technical credential, while only 16% mentioned a computer science degree. Bonuses appeared in 27% of postings and commission in just 6%, which the authors read as FDEs being paid like engineers rather than salespeople.
For FDE candidates, the takeaway is to prepare for an early conversation with leadership and for exercises that test how you work with a customer, not only how you code. A track record of shipped go-lives counts for more than pedigree.
