Toronto industrial-AI startup Aerium raises $2.5M seed and plans to hire more forward-deployed engineers this year

Aerium, founded by two former McKinsey analysts to bring AI agents and custom ML models to industrial manufacturers and distributors, announced a $2.5 million USD seed round on October 16 and told BetaKit it plans to hire a few more forward-deployed engineers before the end of 2026 to deploy its platform.

Toronto-based Aerium announced a $2.5 million USD ($3.6 million CAD) seed round on October 16, led by New York's Gutter Capital with undisclosed strategic angels; the SAFE round closed in July. Co-founders Adam Trotman (CEO) and Michael Dawes previously built software and agentic AI for industrial clients as analysts in McKinsey's Toronto office.

Aerium's platform plugs into a manufacturer's existing systems to gather, clean and centralise data scattered across spreadsheets, email and employees' heads, then runs AI agents and custom machine-learning models to monitor operations and automate tasks. It targets makers of equipment, specialty chemicals and metal parts, and is already deployed with a handful of customers, including an unnamed global transformer manufacturer.

Why it matters for FDEs: the company has just added its first employee and says its next hires will be forward-deployed engineers to roll the platform out at customer sites. It is another example of early-stage vertical AI startups making FDEs among their first hires, which means hands-on work integrating messy industrial data rather than a narrow product role.
