UNKAPPED launches an FDE-led AI practice in India and plans to develop 100 India-based forward deployed engineers by 2028
San Francisco-based UNKAPPED, an applied AI and GTM engineering firm built on a forward-deployed model, is launching in India. It says it will audit 100 Indian enterprises by March 2027 and train 100 local FDEs on live client work by the end of 2028.
UNKAPPED, a San Francisco-headquartered applied AI and go-to-market engineering firm founded by Indian founders, announced its India launch on October 12, 2026 in a press release distributed through NewsVoir and PTI. Its engineers sit inside a client's own systems, find work that should move to AI, build the agents and automations, and stay until those systems run in production with a measured result.
The firm made three commitments at launch: take 100 Indian enterprises through its AI-readiness audit by March 2027, put AI into production at no fewer than 25 of them by December 2027, and develop 100 India-based forward deployed engineers by the end of 2028. It says those engineers will be trained on live enterprise work, not in a classroom.
The pitch is aimed at Indian companies that cannot compete with global platforms, AI labs and capability centres for experienced FDEs. The release claims such engineers in India now earn up to Rs 1.55 crore a year. Co-founder and CTPO Neeraj Kumar said India has no shortage of engineers, only of engineers who have shipped AI inside a real business.
Why it matters for FDEs: the forward-deployed model is moving from AI labs into services firms that sell it to mid-market companies. For engineers in India, that means more FDE-titled roles outside the big labs. The work the release describes covers data access, permissions, legacy ERPs, multilingual channels such as WhatsApp and voice, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection rules.
