What Canadian FDE job ads already demand: eval harnesses, rollback plans and measured results
An engineer read four forward deployed engineer postings open in Canada on October 9 and found they all ask for production systems with tests, monitoring and rollback, not vendor badges.
Writing on October 9, engineer and blogger Antonio Scotland compared Anthropic's new Claude Frontier Academy, which plans to certify 10,000 "Frontier Deployed Engineers" by the end of 2027, with what Canadian employers are actually posting for FDE roles today. He read four open postings: Huron (Toronto, remote), an unnamed Canadian manufacturer hiring through recruiter Calliere (Montréal region, on-site), Experience Bold AI (Toronto, hybrid) and STAN, which builds AI for condo and HOA property managers (North York).
Across industries, the ads describe the same job. Huron wants "tests and evaluations on everything that ships"; the Calliere posting expects a ranked roadmap with baseline metrics and at least two tools in use within three months, and ties part of pay to measurable business results; Bold AI says monitoring, error handling, rollback plans and runbooks "are part of the deliverable, not extras"; STAN puts reviewing failure patterns in voice and chat logs at the centre of the role. None mentions Anthropic's program, and the only credentials named are Huron's preferred AWS and Azure AI certifications.
Scotland's advice for candidates: alongside a working system, build four public artifacts: a use-case selection memo, acceptance criteria written before the agent runs, an evaluation harness, and a rollback plan. Because the Academy is entry-by-employer-nomination and runs in San Francisco, New York and London, he argues a portfolio is the more accessible signal for most Canadian engineers for now.
Why it matters for FDEs: as vendor credentials multiply, hiring managers still screen on evidence that you can choose the right problem, define correctness and keep a deployed system safe. His sample is small, four ads read on a single day, but it gives a concrete checklist for preparing an FDE portfolio.
