Workmate launches custom AI "Workmates" and makes forward deployed engineers the core of how each one gets built

New York startup Workmate launched the Workmate Workforce on October 13, pairing a model-agnostic agent platform with forward-deployed engineers who turn each customer's repeatable processes into custom AI teammates and keep improving them after launch.

Workmate, a New York startup founded by Will Ruben, launched the Workmate Workforce on October 13: custom AI agents that behave like remote colleagues, each with its own cloud computer, email address, app access, job title and human manager. They work in Slack, Microsoft Teams and email and can hand work to one another.

The company says the agents are not off-the-shelf. Workmate pairs its platform, which supports 30+ models from 11 providers and 3,000+ integrations, with a team of forward-deployed engineers who work directly with each customer. Those engineers find the opportunities, turn repeatable processes and past work into Workmates, and keep refining each one after it is deployed.

Early customers are in real estate, private equity and financial services, with use cases such as deal screening, due diligence, reporting, research and accounting.

Why it matters for FDEs: this is another small AI-native company putting forward deployed engineering at the center of the product rather than treating it as a services add-on. In these setups the FDE owns discovery, the build and ongoing iteration of long-running agents, so experience with agent design, evals and customer process mapping is the core skill set.
