Abu Dhabi FDE ads spell out up to 50% travel; Bengaluru ads say "onsite" without a number, FDE Times finds

An FDE Times read of OpenAI and Palantir postings in Abu Dhabi versus HackerRank and Vendasta postings in India finds the Gulf ads state travel and autonomy explicitly, while the Indian ads leave the amount of customer-site time for the interview.

FDE Times compared forward deployed engineer job ads in two fast-growing markets. In Abu Dhabi, OpenAI's posting pairs three office days a week with travel of up to 50%, and makes each engineer own several deployments from prototype to stable production. Palantir's Abu Dhabi ad lists 25–50% travel as preferred, depending on team, and likens the role to a startup CTO working with minimal supervision.

The Indian ads read differently. HackerRank's Bengaluru role is in-office but has the engineer lead customer discovery, pilots and demos on site, and Vendasta's Chennai role asks for travel to customers and embedding with their engineering teams. Neither gives a travel percentage. The piece also cites a UAE recruiter saying engineers with real FDE experience are still scarce in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and notes Microsoft's partnership with HUMAIN in Saudi Arabia, which pairs Microsoft's FDE team with local specialists.

Why it matters: the same title can hide very different lifestyles. If you're applying, log each ad's travel figure, office model, level of supervision and who you'll work alongside, and when an ad is silent, ask in the interview how many days an FDE on the team actually spent at customer sites last month. On your CV, lead with a deployment you took to production yourself and a decision you made without anyone to ask.
