AI Singapore's free AIAP Field Guide adds an FDE track, but its author says only one AI role in ten to twenty will be an FDE job
Version 5.0 of the AIAP Field Guide now carries learners past the apprenticeship into five forward deployed engineer units focused on customer skills. Laurence Liew estimates FDE roles will be one in ten, perhaps one in twenty AI roles, and calls FDE a destination role rather than an entry role.
Version 5.0 of the AIAP Field Guide, the free self-paced path to AI Singapore's AI Apprenticeship Programme, is out at aiready.sg, and for the first time it continues past the apprenticeship to the forward deployed engineer role. Writing on his AI-First Nation site on 18 October, Laurence Liew says the guide has 20 units in two parts: 15 technical units (about 670 to 960 hours) to become AIAP-ready, then five FDE units (another 150 to 250 hours) on customer engagement and discovery, design sprints, prototyping with users, scoping work in the agentic era and owning delivery end to end, with Shape Up as the capstone. Each unit ends with a GitHub deliverable, and five gates, not the calendar, decide when a learner moves on.
Liew argues the apprenticeship was always forward deployment under another name: nine months, including six on a real sponsor project that ships into the sponsor's own systems, with about 600 engineers trained since 2018. He points to OpenAI for Singapore, which promised more than 200 technical roles and an FDE training programme, and to OpenAI's Singapore FDE listing that asks for at least five years of engineering experience.
The headline caution is his estimate that only one in ten, perhaps one in twenty, AI roles will be FDE roles, because each engineer placed with a customer is backed by product, operations and integration teams at home. For people planning an FDE career, his advice is to build production engineering mileage in AI engineer roles first and treat FDE as a later step, since no short programme replaces years of shipping software.
