Christian & Timbers study: elite AI deployment engineers earn $586K to $1.45M a year, with equity and bonus over half the pay

A November 3 study from executive search firm Christian & Timbers puts total pay for elite forward deployed engineers at $586,000 to $1.45 million a year, and up to $2.25 million for a VP or Head of AI Deployment, noting that most job postings leave out the equity that makes up 52% to 66% of the package.

Executive search firm Christian & Timbers published a compensation study on November 3 estimating that enterprises pay elite AI deployment engineers between $586,000 and $1.45 million a year in total compensation, counting base salary, bonus and annualized equity. Senior leaders, such as a VP or Head of AI Deployment, can reach up to $2.25 million, close to the $2.3 to $2.6 million median for named executive officers at Russell 3000 companies cited from The Conference Board.

The firm defines an "elite FDE" narrowly: a senior, AI-native deployment builder, typically with 7 to 15 years of experience, at least two years building and shipping agentic workflows with a documented enterprise impact of $10 million or more, and experience standing up and leading an FDE team. Titles in this band include FDE Manager, Deployment Lead and Director of AI Deployment.

Equity and bonus make up 52% to 66% of pay in that band, and the study notes that many postings, including ones from Palantir, Google, Anthropic and OpenAI that it drew on, do not disclose equity value or target bonus. The ranges are the firm's own estimates, based on more than 550 interviews from January to June 2026 plus live searches and closed offers, not statistical averages.

For FDEs, the takeaway is that the posted base range is only part of the offer at the senior end, and that the top of the market rewards people who have led deployment teams and can show measured business results, not just strong engineering.
