FDE Times maps the pay ladder: Palantir entry at $135K–$200K base, OpenAI FDE manager at $345K

An Oct 8 analysis of public job ads shows Palantir hiring FDSEs with only 1+ years’ experience at an estimated $135K–$200K base, while OpenAI lists a Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering role at $345K requiring 8+ years including 2+ managing FDEs.

FDE Times compared three public postings that sketch a career ladder inside forward deployed engineering. Palantir’s Forward Deployed Software Engineer ad asks for little more than one year of post-graduate experience and estimates base pay at $135,000–$200,000, with travel to customer sites up to 25%. That entry bar is lower than many outsiders assume for the title.

One rung up, OpenAI’s Platform Engineer in Forward Deployed Engineering (New York) asks for 5+ years and lists $230,000–$385,000 plus equity — a floor already above Palantir’s ceiling. OpenAI also posts a Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering role at $345,000 “compensation,” requiring 8+ years including 2+ years managing FDEs, which the piece reads as evidence that a management path now exists inside the profession rather than only by leaving it.

The article stresses that three widely cited medians measure different things: about $190,000 base from 135 job postings, $216,250 self-reported total compensation on Levels.fyi, and $385,000 mid-level total compensation in a vendor report that reuses Levels.fyi data. For candidates, the practical takeaway is to match years and base bands to the posting in front of you, and to treat equity-heavy totals as a separate column rather than a single negotiating number.
