India's global capability centres turn to FDEs as AI moves from pilots to production

Analytics India Magazine reports that forward deployed engineers are becoming a key hire at India's 1,900+ global capability centres, citing an ANSR report that FDE and AI-engineering postings there rose about 1,000% in a year.

Analytics India Magazine (Oct 16) looks at why forward deployed engineers are turning into a core talent category for India's global capability centres (GCCs), the in-house engineering hubs that multinationals run in the country. It cites ANSR's September 2026 talent report, which counts more than 1,900 GCCs employing over 2.1 million people and found postings for forward-deployed and AI-engineering roles up roughly 1,000% over 12 months. The piece also points to Emids' June plan to hire 1,000 "forward-deployed context engineers" for healthcare AI rollouts.

Practitioners quoted in the article describe the job in familiar terms. Databricks senior FDE Vibhor Nigam frames it as a mix of software, AI engineering and business consulting, acting as a trusted advisor to the client's engineers, while IBM FDE Anubhav Pandey says the role shortens the loop between customer pain points and the product roadmap "from months into days".

The article also adds a caveat: Scaler's Amar Srivastava argues FDEs add the most value where data exists, workflows are well defined and there is little physical-world interaction, and that firms with fragmented data may need to fix those foundations first. ANSR found most GCC hiring sits in mid-career talent, with about 62% of hires having three to eight years of experience.

Why it matters for FDEs: GCCs are shifting from executing work handed down by headquarters to owning AI deployments themselves, which opens a large new pool of FDE-style roles inside multinationals' Indian centres, with mid-career engineers best placed to move into them.
