Japan's FDE market: 76% of full-time listings appeared after June, and contract FDE gigs pay ¥650K–¥1.75M a month
A daily FDE industry brief from Osaka-based Synon counts 76 full-time FDE openings at 47 companies on Japan's FDE board, 58 of them posted since June 2026, plus 135 freelance FDE projects quoting ¥650K–¥1.75M a month.
Osaka-based Synon, which publishes a daily brief on the forward deployed engineering market, tallied the posting dates of every Japanese listing on the FDE board job site as of October 10. Of 76 full-time FDE openings at 47 companies, 58 (76%) went up in or after June 2026, and 42 appeared between August and October alone. The brief notes that some of that spike reflects bulk uploads on single days, including eight Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting roles across SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow and other platforms posted on September 11.
The brief also looked at contract work for the first time. A Japanese freelance job board showed 135 projects tagged FDE on October 14, and the first 30 quoted monthly rates of ¥650K to ¥1.75M, averaging about ¥1.06M a month. Annualised, that is roughly ¥12.7M, close to the ¥15M median upper salary bound among the 31 full-time listings that publish pay.
Of the 76 full-time roles, 17 are at foreign companies, led by OpenAI Japan and Palantir, with Databricks, Notion, Cursor and Salesforce adding Japan FDE roles in 2026; the other 59 are at Japanese employers.
For FDEs, the numbers suggest Japan's demand is recent and still building, and that companies are mixing full-time hires with outside FDE contractors. Engineers weighing a contract role can use the monthly range as a rough benchmark against full-time offers.
