Terminal X's forward-deployed engineers are ex-JPMorgan and Blackstone investors who encode a firm's judgment into agents

An OpenAI customer story describes how investment-AI startup Terminal X sends forward-deployed engineers with finance backgrounds onsite for weeks to capture how a firm invests, then builds hundreds of agents the firm owns.

OpenAI published a customer story on October 20 about Terminal X, a startup that builds a "Capital Memory" operating system for investment firms. According to the story, Terminal X's forward-deployed engineers are former finance and investment professionals from JPMorgan and Blackstone who sit with each customer's investment teams and design the firm's agent architecture.

The engineers spend weeks onsite reverse-engineering trusted investment memos and unwritten processes, such as how a credit desk screens a borrower, then encode them into hundreds of agents customised by asset class and strategy. The agents run on-premise or in the customer's own cloud, and an Eval Agent grades their output against the fund's mandate. Terminal X says one private equity customer reported about $2.4 million in annualised savings on due diligence and memo workflows.

Why it matters for FDEs: it's another sign that the role is splitting by domain. In finance, the people being deployed are hired as much for investment judgment as for engineering skill, which opens a path into FDE work for analysts and investors who can build.
