Accenture says it had zero FDEs 18 months ago and now builds them through a 14-week, certification-gated program

At its October 14 Investor Day, Accenture HR chief Kate Clifford said the forward deployed engineer is a brand-new job at the firm, that she found only about 2,000 people in the market with the skill set, and that Accenture now upskills software engineers into FDEs through a 14-week program that ends in a partner certification.

Speaking at Accenture's Investor Day in New York on October 14, Kate Clifford, the firm's Chief Leadership and Human Resources Officer, used the forward deployed engineer as her main example of a brand-new job. She said Accenture had no FDEs 18 months ago, and described the role as a mix of software engineer, solution architect, product manager and consultant focused on solving client problems for business outcomes.

When she scanned the hiring market, Clifford said, she found only about 2,000 people with that skill set, so Accenture chose to build the talent itself. Its 14-week program takes software engineers and combines training with hands-on work in client environments and hackathons, ending in a certification. Accenture does not give anyone the FDE title until they hold a certification from one of its AI and data partners.

Partner segments at the event added detail: a Google Cloud video repeated the 1,000 forward-deployed Accenture engineers in the Gemini Enterprise business group, OpenAI mentioned a technical center of excellence with 700 Accenture forward-deployed experts, and ServiceNow called Accenture the first partner in their joint forward deployed engineer program.

For FDE candidates, this is a clear look at how the biggest services firms plan to fill the role. Rather than hiring experienced FDEs who are hard to find, they retrain their own engineers and treat partner certifications as the entry ticket. Expect more FDE titles at consultancies, with vendor certifications (Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Workday, ServiceNow) working as the de facto credential.
