Cognizant forms a 25,000-person OpenAI Frontier Capability Group to move Codex and ChatGPT into client production systems

On Oct 30 Cognizant announced an OpenAI Frontier Capability Group of more than 25,000 professionals focused on AI-native software engineering with Codex, application modernization and agentic customer operations, its second frontier-model delivery group this month after the Gemini group with Google Cloud.

Cognizant announced on October 30, 2026 that it has formed an OpenAI Frontier Capability Group, bringing together more than 25,000 professionals aligned to delivering OpenAI products such as Codex and ChatGPT for clients. The company says more than 21,000 of its associates have already earned over 40,000 OpenAI learning badges.

The group starts with three areas: AI-native software engineering built around Codex, application modernization using Cognizant's OpenAI-powered Application Modernizer (from reverse engineering mainframe code to generating cloud-native code, with engineers reviewing consequential decisions), and agentic customer operations across sales, service and support. Cognizant says it is testing these approaches in its own sales and customer success teams first.

The work draws on Cognizant's Frontier workforce model of Frontier Certified Engineers and Frontier Business Operators credentialed by frontier-model companies. Cognizant's careers site already lists Forward Deployed Engineer roles under this Frontier engineering track, describing small pods that build and own AI systems end to end and are measured on client outcomes.

Why it matters for FDEs: the pitch is explicitly that enterprises are short of people who can build with frontier models inside the systems their business runs on, which is the core FDE job. Coming days after Cognizant's 18,000-person Gemini group with Google Cloud, it signals that large IT services firms are staffing up embedded deployment work for each major model vendor.
